Founding Director, Sue Turner OBE, explains her motivation for establishing this innovative business.
“In my career, which spans leadership roles in dynamic entrepreneurial businesses and leading not-for-profits, I’ve been amazed by how much data organisations have that they don’t use. Back in 2018 I had heard about Natural Language Processing, a type of artificial intelligence that can analyse text. When I asked experts at universities and other businesses how to apply it in my organisation, no-one was able to tell me how to do this.
The more I learnt about AI, the more I realised it was likely to marginalise disadvantaged people even further. It was clear we needed people from all backgrounds to get into the AI and data sector to push for it to take all views into account, as well as to ensure it benefits everyone, not just those wanting to make big bucks.
“I figured I would have to learn about AI for myself. I looked at many different Executive Education courses as well as online and in person training courses. They were either wildly expensive, too superficial to be useful or impossible to combine with working as both a CEO and Non Executive Director.
“To cut a long story short, I decided to take the plunge and joined the first cohort of MSc AI & Data Science students for the new UK Government backed conversion course Masters degree.
“During that year of full-time study, as well as learning to code in Python, honing my skills in data analysis and building many different machine learning and deep learning models, I was inspired to set up AI Governance to support other business leaders to learn about AI, how to use it wisely and to benefit society.
“Very few businesses are actively thinking about AI ethics – yet – but it’s vital that all of us using AI understand the possibilities and pitfalls of our actions.”

About Sue Turner
Sue Turner has dedicated her career to growing businesses and helping people improve their prospects. The first in her family ever to go to university, she is a Law graduate from Bristol University and has a reputation for combining innovation with scrupulous good governance in private, not-for-profit and public sectors. She has recently completed her Masters degree in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science and founded AI Governance Limited to advise businesses, not-for-profits and policy makers on pragmatic AI, data ethics and governance issues.
the OBE for Services to Social Justice
She is passionate about promoting social justice and was awarded an OBE for Services to Social Justice. She’s helped many businesses make a genuine, positive societal impact and has pledged to donate 20% of her time annually to actively supporting charities and social causes.
She is a Non Executive Director and Chair of the Remuneration & Nominations Committee for Cornish Mutual Assurance, the farming insurance experts, and a Non Executive Director of North Somerset Environment Company.
Sue was previously Chief Executive Officer of Quartet Community Foundation, one of the oldest and largest community foundations in the UK. During her tenure she and the team more than doubled the permanent endowment to over £50 million and increased annual grant-making to over £5 million to support small, local causes. Sue’s career also encompasses time as Director of Communications for The Bristol Port Company (the UK’s most centrally located deep sea port), South West Director for the CBI (“the voice of UK business”) and Director of a national charity which worked with businesses to encourage young people to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths
